A bit
more.

People often struggle to define me and fit me into a “box” that makes sense to them. Being of mixed heritage has consistently raised one question in every country I have lived or travelled to in almost every imaginable encounter—"What are you?"  My immediate thought and response is, “Human.”

It's common to try to identify with someone by fitting them into a box that makes sense based on our value system or perceptions. But these boxes are limited because of perception, biases, misinformation, and other factors that can inhibit our connection as humans.

Hi, my name is Barani.

I’m human and the human in me sees the human in you.

A few background
details

For the last 30 years, I have focused on how our background and environment influence our interactions, thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and beliefs. Throughout my career in marketing and operations, I have been called on to solve more than business needs. I have worked with abused and at-risk children in schools and victims of school shootings, helped to create integrated, diverse campuses through tolerance and education and helped navigate terse negotiations to find "option c,"the option that moves everyone forward.

In 2014, I left the US to help launch a groundbreaking women's health campaign in Nepal, the first-ever national Menstrual Hygiene Day. From this point on, I decided to embody what had always felt true to me:  humans are fundamentally good, and anything described as preserving a race, culture, religion, or people at the cost of another human being is not preservation; it's outright destruction.

I have always been amazed and dismayed by how humans tear each other down in the name of something good. To create true human equity in perpetuity, we start by treating the problem at its root, not the symptoms. We re-establish and awaken the indisputable connection we share as humans through positive actions that build momentum and change from the inside. Hello My Name is Human is one easy way to create an immediate seismic shift that will long outlive us all.
